Why do I listen to “worldly” music?
Cindy Saunders (Bare) drove me and some other musicians down to Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, in the 1970s to attend a songwriting workshop with Academy Award winner, Al Kasha, who has won and been nominated for multiple awards.
Mr. Kasha asked the audience a question: Who are your favorite songwriters?
Everyone answered with Christian artists names, without exception. He rebuked all of us, telling us we were limiting ourselves greatly. He expounded on the works of Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Rogers and Hammerstein, and so on.
Wow. I had a vast music repertoire because I had played clubs and other venues before giving my life to Jesus in Fall 1976, at 22 years old. But, I gave it all up and only listened to Christian music. I was religious. That’s bad. The only people Jesus rebuked were the religious folks. Being religious is bad. Full of the Love of Jesus is GOOD.
When I began dating Rob Lee in 1989, when driving in the car he had the radio tuned to the ROCK station, and inside I thought it was all devil music. Really. I rode along and prayed in the Spirit so as not to be affected by it. Wow.
That’s hard to believe, really. Because I am now so much more free. No longer living in fear. Living in faith and overflowing with Love that only He can give.
Hmmm. I need to turn this into a blog post on my website.
Hey – a bit of trivia for you: Do you know who wrote the Three Dog Night hit “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog”?? Would you believe …
Hoyt Axton!!! (an American Folk and Country artist from the 1960s).
